In real estate/land development, clearing and grubbing follows the site survey and any necessary demolition. Clearing is the process of removing and disposing of all unwanted surface material, such as trees, brush, grass, weeds, downed trees, and other material (old fences). Grubbing removes and disposes of all unwanted vegetative matter from underground, such as stumps, roots, buried logs, and other debris (abandoned utilities). If you have a small plot of land to clear with just a few trees and/or shrubs, it may simply only take a day and a few tools, such as a shovel and hand saw. For larger areas, the big toys may need to come out. These include chain saws, bulldozers, backhoes, or other large equipment. It is now time to consider an experienced, licensed, and insured contractor. As with any project, check with your local government regarding permits. Additionally, there may be guidelines regarding protection of the environment or certain species. Your contractor should have a Responsible Land Disturber License. You will also want to check with the local utility companies to find out about possible lines on the property. This is best accomplished through Miss Utility (dial 811).
